Michael is a Certified Leadership Coach, Organizational Development Consultant, and Facilitator. His client work spans 15 countries across four continents and focuses on helping leaders take care of people while taking care of business.
He is based in Tokyo, speaks English and Japanese, and has worked with leaders at some of the best-known names in global business. Michael has also guest-lectured at Kyoto University and at the United States Air Force Academy.
Michael is a Japan business specialist. His coaching focuses on helping Western leaders in Japan overcome the workplace challenges they face so they can create long-term value in performance and wellbeing for themselves and their organizations. He has facilitated leadership- and coaching-skills workshops for thousands of Fortune 500 professionals over the past 20 years.
Before becoming a leadership coach and consultant, Michael served as a commercial and global functional head at leading firms including Morgan Stanley, public relations firm Burson-Marsteller (now BCW), and Dell.
Michael earned a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MA from the University of Colorado, and an external coaching certificate from Teachers College Columbia University (C3P). He is also a Certified Coach by WBECS, a Certified Trainer by The Ken Blanchard Companies, and an active member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan.
People First is Michael's mantra. It guides how he collaborates with others to help them create their own paths to success and growth – and to inspire them to help others to grow and succeed.
Michael is based in Tokyo and is a senior consultant at People Focus Consulting. Prior to that, he served as the global head of technology learning at Morgan Stanley, where he ran training services so front-office employees could make the most of the firm’s technology to monetize work and boost productivity. Before joining Morgan Stanley, Michael led the global learning and development team at the public relations firm Burson-Marsteller (now BCW) where he developed the talent the agency needed to earn a reputation as a global leader in digital and evidence-based communications.
His commercial experience includes management roles at Dell where he grew a multimillion-dollar business 4X in three years in tandem with improving customer satisfaction by 20% and maintaining the #1 position for contribution margin across Dell Services.
